Busy Week, Class And A Happy Birthday

March 18, 2012 by Shannon

Been hectic for the past few days so I haven’t posted.  Had doctor appointments, a minor surgical procedure and a kid birthday, but I was taking photos all along so at least I was thinking about blogging.  😉

Class was good today.  Rama is getting much better with her Sits and Downs.  Since we missed three classes last go around due to being out of town for shows, I decided to run her through Basic again.  I also decided to take off the head collar and work her on a regular training collar, which several months ago I would have laughed heartily about doing should anyone have suggested it.

She is still somewhat wary of new and strange-looking things; ie the wheelchair, crutches and walking cane we have at the training center.  These are items that our dogs don’t necessarily see every day but things we don’t want them freaking out about should they encounter them.  Since I’d like to eventually do therapy work with Rama, it is important that I desensitize her to these things.  Right now she is not sure about them.  It is my job to make her at ease around them and confident that they aren’t going to “get” her.  Her last fear period wasn’t as bad as the first, and she’s getting better, but there is still work to do.

After class we headed to Starbucks.  This is one of my favorite things to do with Rama.  The breeze was nice and cool.  It’s so nice to just sit and watch the world go by while enjoying a latte.

“Any crumbs back here?”

After relaxing with coffee and family for a while, we headed home to get ready for the 17-year-old’s birthday gathering.    Great-grandma came in with her rolling walker and Rama didn’t much care for it.  She’d never seen one like that before so I was glad for the opportunity for her to be exposed to it.  If I can find one at a garage sale or thrift shop I might pick one up and keep it here, just so that it becomes part of her everyday life.

A lot of the photos taken were on Nana’s camera, so we’ll have to wait until she sends them to us to post them.  Dinner was delicious.  We had steak, baked potatoes and green beans for dinner so Rama had a wonderful dinner, too.
